My Thoughts

     The third book in the fantastically amazing Chaos series, focuses on Joker and his lady love Carissa. Through a series of bad decisions and poor family situations, both Joker and Carissa are at a point in their lives when things seem to be at their worst. Joker is completely cut off from his childhood family, has terrible memories of a terrible father, and no mother in his life. He lives for his MC club. Carissa is fresh off a divorce, has an infant to care for, and a job where she works 40+ hours a week. Needless to say, things are complicated.

     As with everything Kristen Ashley writes, this is another winner. I am a huge fan of the Chaos series and just love the characters. Not knowing too awful much about Joker or his history, it broke my heart to read about his horrific father. Yet, as we have seen in the past, Ashley will bring you down only to bring you back up again.

    Unique in this book, Ashley shows more of the inner workings of Ride, the Motorcycle repair business the club owns. She highlights how each person within the club has their purpose and I adore any scene that features Tack, Shy, or Rush.

    Another winner, Kristen Ashley took these two seemingly opposite characters and have given them the perfect love story. Things are not always as they seem, as Joker and Carissa show. Each thinks the other has something, but indeed, they fulfill that need in one another. Plus, I think props need to go to Kristen Ashley for writing such wonderful characters that we can’t wait to get more of. Its a toss up, but Joker and Shy are in the running for hottest MC book in my collection. Bravo!

My Thoughts

     First off, I am going to be completely honest and say that you can read this book as a standalone if you absolutely must. If you can however, read Mayhem. It’s Adam and Ro’s story and absolutely adds a ton to this story. Regardless though, Jamie Shaw knocks Riot out of the park and has an anxiously awaiting reader here in Missouri.

    Dee Dawson has a huge attraction for rock and roller guitarist, Joel Gibbon. Content as a hook up for several months, she begins to want more than a casual night of no holds barred passion. Joel doesn't want or need a girlfriend and is content to leave their relationship the way it is. After a harrowing attack on Dee that leaves her traumatized, Joel realizes that his feelings for Dee run deeper than he ever imagined.

     I adore the world that Jamie has created. Filled with great main characters, extraordinary secondary characters, and really fun sexy times, Shaw writes unique stories. What I loved the most is how excellently she really writes 20-somethings. No one has everything figured out and she allows her characters to change and grow without assuming anything. Sure you know there will hopefully be a happy ending, but beyond that, her books don’t seem to follow a formula and are ultimately delightful.

     Fans of Jay Crownover will have a new author in Jamie Shaw. A great writer with wonderful characters, Shaw’s take on the rock star world is fresh and fun. Fast paced with plenty of angst and a lovely happily ever after, Shaw’s books seem to only get better as time goes on.

My Thoughts

     Horribly embarrassed as a teenager by the future Duke of Pindar after a love poem that she has written is discovered, Mia swears that she will find a way to have her revenge. Over a decade later, Mia is in a bind. Her entire family has passed away and she is left trying to keep custody of her young, disabled nephew. In order to keep her nephew from the clutches of an evil uncle, Mia must marry someone powerful enogh to stand up to the uncle while also staying respectable. Who else does she turn to, except for her childhood nemesis, Vander, the future Duke.

     Eloisa James continues her newest series by delightfully delving into Mia and Vander’s story. Always a wonderful ride, James has exceeded my wildest expectations with Vander’s tale. With glimpses of previous characters, Vander and Mia don’t seem to match at all. Mia begins her relationship by blackmailing Vander with evidence that puts his father in an almost treasonous light. Yet, you can’t help but feel this desperate mood is called for when you see how desperate Mia is to save her only living family.

     Mia makes her living as a romance writer.  I thought it was incredibly clever how James worked in Mia’s work with the actual romance of the story. It gave me a little insight into the novel writing process and allowed us to get even farther into Mia’s head and motivations. Plus it was just really fun to read her novel and how it related to her current predicament.

     I adored Mia’s story but fell in love with Vander all over again. He truly came into his own and was absolutely one of my favorite James heroes to date. Delightful with plenty of witty banter, Mia and Vander’s story was worth the wait. There are even some subtle nods to Julia Quinn and Lisa Kleypas, so keep your eyes peeled. This may even be my favorite James novel to date and is an excellent addition to her canon.

My Thoughts

    Race is the ultimate bad boy. He steals, he cheats, and he is always looking for ways to get ahead in the Point, filled with criminals and bad guys. Race revels in being one of the baddest of the bad. Considered almost royalty in the Point by his association with the other criminal element, Race loves only his sister and barely tolerates Bax, his childhood friend and almost brother in law.

    Brysen is as opposite from Race as you can be. She’s trying to go to school, attempting to take care of her little sister and dealing with her Mother’s health issues...all while trying to be a normal twenty something. When someone begins threatening Brysen at work, Race steps in and sparks explode between the two. Is Brysen ready to take on all that is Race and be his Queen of the Point or will she fear for the future?

     Jay Crownover is one of my favorite authors. She can write the absolute worst characters that you don’t think can be redeemed..and she makes them totally redeemable. At the end of the previous book, you hate Race. Seriously. He’s this egomaniac with a devil may care attitude. Yet, the minute Brysen needs him to be her knight, he steps up to the plate. He becomes the man that Brysen needs and I absolutely fell in love with him.

    Hot and captivating, Better When He’s Bold is my newest favorite Crownover book. She brings two wildly different characters and gives them the perfect story. Entertaining and super sexy, Crownover can bring the naughty unlike anyone else. A great story that only brings you closer to the edge, I can’t wait to read Better When He’s Brave, coming in June 2015!

My Thoughts

   Rowan is a freshman in college living the dream. She’s living with her boyfriend who she thinks she loves. Yet one night her dreams for the future are dashed when she sees him with with another woman. That very same evening, she meets Adam Everest, local college student and rock star extraordinaire. While dealing with the heartbreak of her first love, she looks to Adam. Hijinks ensue as there are mistaken identities, rock band parties, late night/early morning study sessions and some super sexy times.

    This is going to get a bit confusing, so pay close attention.  I started out strongly disliking it, and ended up freaking loving this book. The first ⅓ of the book, I absolutely couldn’t get my mind around. I began reading it and I didn’t like the characters one bit. Rowan seemed needy and Adam was just a huge dirt bag. But once I got through my initial dislike of them, I truly saw Rowan and Adam for what they were. These two twenty something people, looking at the world in a different way and just trying to find their way through life when they are confused. Ultimately these two are just trying their best and I had initially met them at their worst.

     Adam is fantastic. I think I’m glad that I didn’t like him in the beginning because he became redeemed as you meet him through the story. He’s this partier who goes through women like socks. Yet he knows that Rowan is different. First of all, she’s the only woman who has ever turned down his advances. She doesn’t seem super impressed by his rock star status. Rowan likes his friends and they like her. Dealing with the heartbreak of her boyfriend cheating and then fighting loneliness in a city by herself, Rowan and Adam find friendship first, then a fantastic relationship. Adam is the true definition of a reformed rake and I wish I was lucky enough to have found him when I was going to college!

     A little hard for me to get into to begin with, I am thrilled I was lucky enough to read Jamie Shaw’s newest book. She plans to continue this series with the other band members. I’ve been stalking her like a crazy person. Her followup to Mayhem is titled Riot and will explore the story of Adam’s bandmate Joel and Rowan’s friend Dee. Filled with fun sexy times and a great voice in the New Adult genre, Jamie Shaw is a rising star! I wouldn’t mind being one of Adam’s socks...just sayin’!

     Becca Ramsey is the local hairdresser in Lovett, Texas. She’s ready to handle the Sadie Hollowell’s hair for her big day, but before she can, Becca has to deal with Nate Parrish. Nate is the town’s mechanic, ultimate bad boy, and falls immediately for the slightly wild Becca.

     I am a huge fan of Gibson’s work and this novella is no different. Fun, quirky, and fast paced, Gibson’s voice shines through. Offering quick glimpses of our favorite characters from previous Lovett, Texas novels, the main portion of the romance centers around Becca and Nate. Will they, won’t they?

     Cute and a fun read, I enjoyed reading about past favorites and meeting both of these new characters. A great addition to the series offering a great look at what comes next, I enjoyed I Do! immensely and am eagerly anticipating Gibson’s next book!

My Thoughts

   Rowdy St. James is used to being left by the ones he loves. His mother was murdered when he was still a child, his father was nonexistent in his life, and his best friend Salem, left town when she turned 18. So when Salem shows back up 10 years later, he is understandably unsure of how to relate to the girl he once knew. The only thing he knows for sure, he isn’t ready to connect with his former friend only to be hurt once again.

    Salem Cruz ran away at the age of 18 to escape from her tyrannical father. Independent for the first time, she never forgot her friend Rowdy or their intense connection. She hears through the grapevine that he is now working in a tattoo parlor in Denver so when she is offered a job in the very same shop, she takes it thinking she and her friend will have a good reunion. Little does she know that their relationship is about to go to the next level.

    Jay Crownover is simply wonderful. I love her writing style and the characters are always written superbly. She takes tattooed bad boys who have been on the wrong side of the law more than once and makes them someone you wanna take home to Mama.

    Rowdy and Salem have a lot of history to work through. Rowdy has led such a lonely life with everyone leaving him, it's truly heartbreaking. You can honestly feel his loneliness and understand how hesitant he is to connect with Salem again. Salem herself has been dealing with severe mental issues developed by a lifetime of abuse from her father. Definitely emotional, but finally when they connect its like fireworks!

     A tumultuous, emotional yet sexy novel, Crownover can write damaged characters unlike any other. Fantastically entertaining, I was drawn into Rowdy’s story and fell in love with Salem. The secondary characters from previous novels are featured and I loved catching up with my favorite Marked Men. Look for more Marked Men fun next year when Asa gets his own story!

My Thoughts

    Jenna has lived most of her life, since the age of three, wondering why her Mother left one night. Jenna has spent her entire life investigating her mother’s disappearance. Saving money from her babysitting jobs, Jenna is now thirteen years old and decides to approach a local psychic for help. Told from four points of view: Picoult’s newest novel shares the story of Jenna, our abandoned and lonely child; Alice, Jenna’s mother who researches elephants and their behaviors; Serenity Jones, a has-been psychic skeptical of her own gift; and Virgil Stanhope, the original investigator in Alice’s disappearance who is now jaded and no longer believes in happy endings.

    Jenna’s search for her mother is desperate, at times a bit misguided, but she writes a teenager’s mind very well. Serenity’s lost her way, lost her psychic powers, and lost her career. She comes to view Jenna’s search for her Mother as a way to redeem all that she has lost. Virgil, our detective, sees Alice in his dreams. She’s the one case he hasn’t been able to forget, the one disappearance that still stews in his mind. Originally dismissive of Jenna’s research, he comes to view Alice almost as Abab did the great white whale. Drawn just as far in as Serenity, they join forces to help Jenna find out what truly happened that night over a decade ago. Finally, Alice, Jenna’s mother shares her story, both of her marriage to Jenna’s father and her research with her first love, the elephants she regards in such high esteem. The differing anecdotes about the elephants work perfectly in tandem with the plot points of the story and serve to reinforce various aspects of the story.

     I was shattered by Leaving Time. Absolutely, gut wrenching sorrow paired with optimism, strength, and love, I was swept away into a land of a Mother’s embrace and an elephant’s grief. Completely different than any other Picoult book I’ve read, she uses the research with elephants to reinforce the themes of motherhood, growing up, and how the world deals with grief. Utterly lovely writing, I was transported into world filled with elephants, family issues, life, love and grief in a most stunning way. As with all Picoult books, you will be stunned by the absolute brilliance of the ending.

My Thoughts

     Camille is almost the anti-corporate executive. With bright green hair, a devil may care attitude, a hacker/hippie mentality, and multiple piercings, Camille is used to being the outsider. Yet every time she sees Nate Lawford, she can’t help but think there may be something more in his eyes than contempt. Meeting everyday in the elevator, they seem to stalk one another, as a lion would a gazelle.

    Nate proposes a unique idea to Camille after a steamy encounter...be completely his for a month. Camille is at first intrigued by the idea but once within Nate’s home and in his possession, they find out just how well they fit with one another. Nate’s entire life has been measured and metered, devoid of emotion and parental love. With Camille, he is encouraged to be emotional and isn’t bothered at all by her unconventional choices in both wardrobe and hair color.

     I loved this story so stinkin’ much. Oye. I knew I was going to love Camille when she first appeared in Flashes of Me. She’s such a flower child rebel, she’s so adorable and fun loving. Nate, I honestly didn’t like. He seemed so cold and just unapproachable. However, he is totally redeemed when you meet his wildly crazy parents and see how he treats Camille when he’s finally allowed to just be himself.

    Wonderfully sexy and witty, Breaking All the Rules, is a sweet, sensual story that finally tells the story of our favorite green haired hacker Camille and the cold but perhaps misunderstood Nate. Camille has to fight her inhibitions and self consciousness while Nate is forced out of his unemotional shell. I thoroughly enjoyed both the eroticism of the story while also telling a highly involved character driven story. Easily read as a stand alone book, if you haven’t read sort of the precurser, check out Flashes of Me also!

My Thoughts

      Antoinette, “Annie” to her friends, is at the end of her rope, ending up on a solitary road in the middle of a blizzard on an island she only knew as a child. Her mother has died, leaving behind a small cabin filled with bad memories but quickly becomes the only refuge Annie has. When she returns to her former childhood home, she is assaulted by the memories of her mother and the presence of her former crush, Theo Harp, only creates a more tense situation.

     Theo has overcome a very sinister childhood to become an accomplished horror author. He lives a truly solitary life and is still dealing with the death of his twin sister and the suicide of his wife. Unused to any disruptions in his lonely existence, he is disturbed by Annie’s return to her childhood home that coincidentally is just down the hill from his very own mansion. Theo and Annie come together in an explosion of murderous intentions, revealed secrets, a little laughter and a whole lotta love.

    From the very beginning, you can tell this isn’t your usual Susan Elizabeth Phillips book. There is a very dark tone even in the first few pages that isn’t readily apparent in Phillips’ other novels. While it was very different for me, and at times I couldn’t believe my “go to” author was the actual author of what I was reading, the book worked for me.

      There is a lot going on in this one, so bear with me a moment. Crazy siblings, homicidal wives, mistaken identities, greed, lies, crucial family dynamics, hidden fortunes, unknown fathers, and a whole lot more make up Heroes Are My Weakness. Theo and Annie’s relationship takes a backseat sometimes, but it builds slowly and surely. Not as sexy as some of her other books, I found myself enjoying the mysteries as they unfolded and was satisfied with the outcome of the story.    

     A different tone from other Phillips books, Heroes Are My Weakness takes on a whole new world where no one is safe from the machinations of others. Theo and Annie have led fairly disastrous lives but through no fault of their own, but lets face it, without their pasts they wouldn’t have ended up together. Different than her own novels, but no less special, Seppie fans will find her newest one no less intriguing than her famed Stars series.
