Alpha Hero Blog Hop

Welcome to my little corner of the world!

When I saw the Alpha Hero Blog Hop, I knew I had to participate. Want to know what I love reading about more than anything? Alpha heroes :)

I think one of my favorite heroes from this year's new releases would have to be Braden from one of my favorite 2012 releases, On Dublin Street.

Braden is no stranger to adversity. A distant mother and overly controlling father have ruled his life but when he meets Jocelyn, he sees something different. Overbearing at times, Braden tries to fit Joss, our heroine, into his neatly ordered life but like all things in life, things don’t quite go as planned.

I loved Jocelyn and Braden individually, but loved them more together. They each were so independent that when they finally decide to be together fireworks erupted. Hilarious, dramatic, emotional and shiver worthy, Joss and Braden were made for one another and I loved it!

Here is my favorite excerpt from this fantastic title -
“Where are the others?”
Braden flicked me a casual glance as he took a sip from the cold glass of water the waiter had just poured. “What others?”
What others? I gritted my teeth. “You said this was a business meeting.”
“Yes, but I didn’t say what business.”
Oh my God. This was a date! No way. First the bossiness, then the handholding… no. No, no, no. I pushed my chair out, about two seconds from shooting up to my feet when Braden’s next words froze me in place.
“You try to leave, I’ll tackle you.” Even though he wasn’t looking at me when he said it, I could tell he was deadly serious.

So for stopping by today, I am offering an e-copy of one of my favorite alpha heroes and his story.

Just leave a comment about who YOUR favorite Alpha hero is with your e-mail for your chance to win!

In addition to my prize, you have the chance to win a grand prize!
The blog hop will have THREE grand prizes. You as a reader can go to EACH blog and comment with your email address and be entered to win. Yep, you can enter over 200 times!

Now what are those prizes?

1st Grand Prize: A Kindle Fire or Nook Tablet

3rd Grand Prize: The following Swag Pack!

Jump on the Banned Wagon

Celebrate Banned Books
September 30th - October 6th, 2012
Welcome to the Brunette Librarian,
my little corner of the blogosphere!

I am a librarian and take the banning of books pretty dang seriously. Beyond someone thinking they have a right to tell you what to read or forbid it, it is a direct violation of our rights.

I was asked to participate in the "Banned Wagon" week and am loving it! I love the sharing of banned books and getting that information out there.

Earlier this week I shared some displays I created, so if you have a minute, be sure to stop over and check out how we are celebrating at my little library in Missouri.

My favorite banned book is The Glass Castle. If you haven't ever read this book, oh my goodness. I have included my review below...

Synopsis from Goodreads:
In the tradition of Mary Karr's "The Liars' Club" and Rick Bragg's "All Over But the Shouting," Walls has written a stunning and life-affirming memoir about surviving a willfully impoverished, eccentric, and severely misguided family.
My Thoughts:
My book group picked up “The Glass Castle” this past month simply because of word of mouth. Everyone had heard about it (except me!) so we decided we better see what all the fuss was about. Definitely one that makes you think, without a doubt the author, Jeannette Walls has had a pretty extraordinary life. We actually started our book group with this question and I believe it really sums up a lot about this book, “If you saw your mother going through a dumpster in raggedy clothes while you were with you friends, would you stop to introduce them?”
“The Glass Castle” is really broken into two sections - one part when Jeannette is a child and they live in the desert, while the second half has the family growing older, making future decisions, and basically living very different lives. Jeannette’s parents believed in a very basic life. They were absolutely fine with not having electricity or water, they ate what they had, and rarely thought about the future. They home schooled their children and moved dozens of times during their childhoods. As Jeannette grew older, she realized normal families didn’t live this way - they actually have food in their refrigerators and don’t have to eat just margarine.      Perhaps the most interesting point in this book, or perhaps what surprised me the most, was that the children knew the way they were living was terrible and none of them replicated the living conditions in adulthood. Their parents may be fine with not working, going to food shelters for every meal and living on the streets, but their children are most assuredly not.
An interesting look at life that is utterly foreign to me, “The Glass Castle” is one of those books you share with your friends. Interesting and intriguing, I would definitely recommend this to those who like intense nonfiction reads. Our book club read it and boy, did we have an intense discussion!

So why was this BANNED?

two separate but documented cases have occurred these past few years.

2012 - - Challenged, but retained as part of the tenth-grade English curriculum in the Sade-Central City High School classrooms in Cairnbrook (PA). The 2005 best-selling memoir in which Walls describes her hardscrabble upbringing includes sexual assault, casual profanity, drunkenness, seeing the family cat pitched from a moving car, and having to drink ditch water. Even critics of the graphic book praise its theme - overcoming adversity.
2010 - -Challenged at the William S. Hart Union High School District in Saugus (CA) as required summer reading for the honors English program. The 2005 memoir chronicles the author's harsh childhood and family life and includes profanity, criticisms of Christianity, and accounts of sexual abuse and prostitution. Students have the option of alternative assignments that still meet objectives and teaching goals.

GIVEAWAY and Guest Post - "Things Your Dog Doesn't Want You to Know"

"Things Your Dog
Doesn't Want You to Know"
By: Hy Conrad & Jeff Johnson

Synopsis from Goodreads:
Dear Human:
Your dog probably puzzles you. Most of us do that. And most of us would like to keep things as they are: humans in the dark, dogs with the upper hand.
But we dogs are about to let you in a little secret. Okay, a lot of secrets. We graduated first in our obedience class three times. This should tell you something. Puppies know that they're being cute. They're using you. We don't sound anything like those silly voices you use to imitate us. We hate those ridiculous names you give some of us. Moonbeam is not a dignified name for a mutt. You might want to check your herb garden for fertilizer. We are only wearing this stupid birthday hat so we can get some cake. No self-respecting dog cares about his birthday. We are not spoiled, certainly not in comparison to teenage girls. We are in charge of the house. We let you pretend that you are.
We'd be lost without you. We love you.
It's all in our new book, Things Your Dog Doesn't Want You To Know, as told to humans Hy Conrad and Jeff Johnson. Even Steve Martin (yes, THAT Steve Martin) raves about us Inside you'll find revelations such as the reason we at the sofa (leather tastes very similar to rawhide), and what we really think of the costumes you dress us up in.
I'm not alone. Ten other courageous canines have stepped forward to tell you what your dog won't - every last dirty, hairy bit of it. If you have dogs, love dogs, or have ever been baffled by a dog, this book is a must-have.

See my post from yesterday for how much I LOVED this book.

I was lucky enough that author Hy Conrad took a minute to answer some of the questions I had.

Thank you Mr. Conrad!!

A word with Hy Conrad:

The Brunette Librarian - - I simply love the book, "Things Your Dog Doesn't Want You to Know," when you were writing it, did you have a favorite dog? Gabby and Sophie are mine!
HY
I think writers, being naturally lazy, love characters that are easy to write for. From that viewpoint, Axelrod and Tinkberbell are total favorites. With Axelrod, we got to write a lot of dumb dog jokes. And Tinkerbell turned out to be the snottiest, most superior animal on the planet, which somehow came easy to us, too.
When we wanted to get sentimental and take the long view about what dogs and humans mean to each other, we turned to Sophie, our old soul. Gabby was a late addition to the pack, when we found we were missing the young voice of a self-obsessed girl.
The Brunette Librarian - - What was your inspiration?
HY
Jeff and I had wanted to do a project together for years. One night we were watching an infomercial for a book, “Things the Banks Don’t Want You to Know.” Two seconds later the title for a new book came to us as a joke. Ten seconds after that we realized we had a great book idea. We started it as a blog, which is now our website (thingsyourdog.com). Before we knew what was happening, we had a book deal and a mandate to write 115 of these suckers.
The Brunette Librarian - - How did you come up with your secrets? Were they secrets you found out in life?
HY
The first 60 were fairly easy: Why do dogs love to stick their heads out of car windows? Why do dogs dig holes in the backyard? We would do a little research then see what made us laugh.
We discovered that half the fun was in creating the 11 distinct characters and having each one take us on a little journey. For instance, we started with one story for Sarge, our working dog. At the end he loses his job. The idea quickly came that every story would be about him getting a new job then losing it: drug-sniffing dog; junk-yard dog; service dog. When Sarge finally gets adopted by a regular family, he still thinks it’s a job. But it’s a job he likes, if he can just figure out it is.
To get back on topic, I think the one secret we discovered is that everyone makes up stories about what their dog is thinking. But the great fun of dogs is that you can never really know.
The Brunette Librarian - - Have you seen the new blog  http://dog-shaming.com/ yet? What do you think about it?
HY
We have mixed feelings about that website. On the one hand, yes, it’s hilarious. On the other hand, we want you to buy our book. It’s similar to how TV writers feel about reality shows. Yes, “Jersey Shore” is entertaining. But wouldn’t you rather watch a comedy or drama written by trained professionals with years of experience who have mortgage payments to make? I guess the short answer is “Buy our book!”
The Brunette Librarian - - Do you have any dogs now that live with you?
HY
We both had dogs as kids. As an adult, I discovered I’d become allergic to most breeds. Miniature schnauzers, I found, are hypo-allergenic, don’t shed and are wonderfully adventurous. We are now on our third generation of schnauzers, Charlie and Nelson. The others are buried at the top of our hill in Vermont. Nelson loves to pee on the marker, for some reason.

The Brunette Librarian - - Finally, do you have a funny dog story of your own to share?

HY
We once had a dog who’d lost some of the use of his hindquarters. One day, I was carrying him through the lobby of a hotel and stopped to talk to the manager. A few seconds later, I realized Jake had just pooped in my hand. I continued standing there, talking and pretending that nothing had happened. Then we went right up to the room and both had a bath.

Sizzling Books of Summer Giveaway Hop

beach-1-3-1

The Sizzling Books of Summer Giveaway Hop is for the books you've read this summer that have made you sizzle.

Grab some sun tan lotion, sun glasses, bathing suit and a yummy drink, this hop is sure to be a hot one!

What book made me sizzle this summer??
Without a doubt, one of the wildest romances I read this summer was "Backstage Pass" By: Olivia Cunning.

Human Sexuality Professor, Myrna Evans, wants nothing but a weekend of
hot, no-strings-attached sex with Sinners' sensual lead guitarist,
but Brian Sinclair is looking for something more permanent than a one-
night stand.  Unable to compose music for months, when Brian makes love to uninhibited Myrna, he hears exquisite guitar riffs and finger-

burning solos.  In Myrna, he's found his muse.

What mixed drink would go with this awesomely hot summer read?

Try a Cherry Popper Cocktail (In honor of Trey)
Ingredients:
1 short of Strawberry schnapps
7-Up or Sprite
1 Cherry

Add the strawberry schnapps to a glass, and fill with 7-Up. Drop in a cherry, and serve.

Giveaway!
In honor of one of my favorite reads this summer, I am giving away your choice of Olivia Cunning e-book to two winners. She has several books out right now but "Backstage Pass" By: Olivia Cunning is definitely a favorite of mine.

If you have all of Olivia's awesome books, I'm totally up for another hot author with a similar price tag.

Hot Summer Heroes Blog Hop

Welcome to the Summer Heroes Blog Hop!

I am so excited to have you here!
Welcome!

Are you tired of hopping around and seeing all these hot heroes? :)

I am a huge fan of romance, which I bet you can tell just by checking out my blog for a few minutes. But what makes a hero, a true bonafide "hot" hero?

At the top of my list is intelligence. A smart hero is a hot hero in my book. Kindness is second. That macho stuff only goes so far, if a hero isn't kind, I'm not interested.

So in the interests of sharing some of my favorite reads, I'm giving away your choice of the following e-books. The following books I've read, enjoyed, and have all of the qualities I want in my hot hero!

"Hearts in Darkness"
By: Laura Kaye

Makenna James thinks her day can't get any worse, until she finds herself stuck in a pitch-black elevator with a complete stranger. Distracted by a phone call and juggling too much stuff, the pin-striped accountant caught only a glimpse of a dragon tattoo on his hand before the lights went out.

Caden Grayson is amused when a redhead literally falls at his feet. His amusement turns to panic when the power fails. Despite his piercings, tats, and vicious scar, he's terrified of the dark and confined spaces. Now, he's trapped in his own worst nightmare.

To fight fear, they must both reach out and open up. With no preconceived notions based on looks to hold them back, they discover just how much they have in common. In the warming darkness, attraction grows and sparks fly, but will they feel the same when the lights come back on?

OR YOUR CHOICE OF ANY R.L. MATHEWSON TITLE
Tall, Dark & Heartless (Pyte/Sentinel, #3)  Without Regret (Pyte/Sentinel, #2)  Tall, Dark & Lonely (Pyte/Sentinel, #1)

How do you win?
Leave a comment with your e-mail.
The winner will be chosen August 20th.
Easy, peezy, lemon squeezy!

Hot Jocks in July Giveaway Hop

Welcome to the Brunette Librarian's Blog!
I am thrilled you found your way over to my little corner of the Blogosphere.

Do you have a favorite sports themed book or series?

I do!
Susan Elizabeth Phillips is the first romance author that I read that really did sports heroes right! They are sexy, smart, funny and romantic...while also being football stars. Really, what more do you need in a hero?  The Chicago Stars series are among my favorite romances ever and I'm a little bit guilty, but I usually reread the entire series at least once a year. Each one is special in its own way, while also being wonderfully written and remarkable.

It Had to Be You (Chicago Stars #1)    Heaven, Texas (Chicago Stars, #2)   Nobody's Baby But Mine (Chicago Stars, #3)   Dream a Little Dream (Chicago Stars, #4)    This Heart of Mine (Chicago Stars, #5)   Match Me If You Can (Chicago Stars, #6)   Natural Born Charmer (Chicago Stars, #7)
So, what can you win?
In honor of the wonderful Ms. Phillips and her newest release, I am awarding one of the e-books from the Chicago Stars series.

Thankful for the Holidays Giveaway Hop

Welcome to my VERY VERY FIRST Blog hop!
We are Thankful For the Holidays AND
for Reviews By Molly and Romancing the Book for sponsoring!

What can you win?
"To Pleasure a Duke" By: Sara Bennett
Synopsis:
It has taken Eugenie Belmont but a moment to decide whom to marry . . .
Unfortunately the gentleman in question, the Duke of Somerton, hasn’t yet offered—a mere formality for a confirmed member of the Husband Hunters Club of Miss Debenham’s Finishing School. Like her friends, Eugenie is unwilling to wait demurely until the perfect mate happens by. And, despite the handsome duke’s imposing reputation, she can feel his heated glances in her direction are charged with desire . . . and possibilities.
Saddled with a dukedom, a haughty dowager, and an irresponsible younger sister, Sinclair St. John is far too occupied with important matters to indulge in romantic whims. But for the first time in his life, a brazen temptress has him utterly distracted. He could—and he should—dismiss her and court someone more befitting his station. But he is irresistibly drawn to this bewitching woman . . . and must match her game of seduction, move for passionate move.
