Big Bad Bite Blog Tour & Giveaway

Welcome to the Big Bad Bite Book Tour!!

What would it be like to live in a world where you are considered abnormal to those who are above the norm?

Jenna O’ Conner has been taught her whole life to hide from everyone. Never to let anyone to close enough to know that she would prefer a shotgun for her birthday over of a bouquet of roses. She’s been smothered by her over protective family so that no one learns what she truly is. Which is not human. Nor, is she considered the norm for the supernatural Other community that is benevolent enough to share this world with the humans.
In a desperate attempt to live her own life away from the small town she was raised in, Jenna obtains her dream job as the newest member on the Wilmington Police Department’s SWAT Team. What she didn’t predict was that she would run into trouble her first day on the job, in the form of a deadly, mouthwatering man named Adam McPhee. Who is also not human, but more like a wolf walking around in human skin. He’s determined to figure out exactly what Jenna is, which unbeknownst to him, could very well put her life in danger. He’s also determined to have her all to himself.
As if that wasn’t enough for Jenna to deal with, bad news blows into town. A group of extremist Shifters who think humans are cattle and factions of Others worldwide should stay within their own species - never to intermingle. Chaos ensues. Jenna has to find a way to shut them down, but in the process of trying to do that, discovers things about herself that even she never thought was possible.
Who said the wolf was what you had to worry about?
Welcome to the real world.

About the Author
Jessie Lane is the writing team of Melissa Pahl and Crystal Leo. The two sister-in-laws share a passionate love of naughty romance, cliff hanging suspense, and out-of-this-world characters that demand your attention, or threaten to slap you around until you do pay attention to them. Because really, it is ALL about the characters. (They're kind of megalomaniacs - but don't tell them that we said that.)

Crystal and Melissa often live half their lives with their heads in the clouds dreaming of alpha military hunks, werewolves and kick ass heroines crazy enough to chase after creatures that they unquestionably should know better than to chase.

Their first YA novel, The Burning Star, was released in May 2012. Big Bad Bite is their second novel, but their first adult paranormal romance. They are now working on their next two novels, Walk On The Striped Side and Secret Maneuvers. With these projects underway, they are looking forward to showing the rest of the world their crazy stories, heroes and heroines that often plague their minds until written, and hope you will join them on their journey!

Why Write the Man Whores?
Well, why not? Even the sweetest guy you’ve ever known has had a man whore moment at some point and time in his life. We like to write it as we see it. So essentially, we’re admitting that we’ve known a lot of man whores in our lives, and are well versed in the man whore’s perspective. Not to mention that just because he might drool after anything with long legs, a short skirt, and nice breasts doesn’t mean that he’s not a good guy to have at your back when you need it. He’s just letting his little head rule his big head for a few minutes, and we chose not to let that belittle him too much in our eyes. We’d just advise all of our girlfriends never to sleep with him, even if they have a gun to their head as a threat or on the flip side, was offered a million dollars to do it. He has man-whore-itus, and that might be contagious, so you can be friends with the man whore, just don’t sleep with him. *Waves finger in the no-no motion. Don’t go to the dark side*
We have a few man whores in our latest book to be released, Big Bad Bite. First one you’ll encounter is Kent, one of our heroine’s co-worker’s from the Wilmington Police Department’s SWAT team. We also introduce you to a tiger shifter named Alec, who looks and acts like the sexy bad boy that he is.     They’re there because we find them entertaining, and also because we believe art imitates life. These two are Melissa’s favorite characters in the book because they remind her of the majority of her high school and college friends of the male variety. Their ‘dating’ quests were hilarious to watch. Especially when her 21 year old friend drank so much at the bar one night that he ended up going home with a woman old enough to be his grandma. (Re-read paragraph above and let us reiterate, we’ve known A LOT of man whores in our lives).
Does our hero Adam fall into this category? Well, at one point in his past, more than likely, but he’s left those practices far behind him and has had a hell of a dry spell since nothing interests him anymore. Or at least, nothing catches his eye until he meets the mysterious little Jenna when the SWAT team she works with accidentally keeps him from his prey. He might not have gotten his claws into his original target, but he’s loathe to regret it since it has dropped something much more intriguing in his lap. Now, if he can just keep her out of the hands of the man whore she works with…

Excerpt
The house had seemed so much bigger to her before she parked two shifters and a demon in the living room. Now with the three large-bodied men huddled in the room, she felt damn near claustrophobic. Her Uncle and brother were smashed next to each other on her small dove gray loveseat while Kent occupied her only other sitting option in the room, a vibrant suede purple tufted armchair. The look of barely suppressed disgust on his face at having to sit in what he had announced was “a girly monstrosity that no man should ever have to suffer, in the house of his newest partner who he expected to have better taste no less.” At least that was the reason he would give his therapist for the nightmares he was sure to endure.
Jenna just thought the whole damn thing was hysterical. In the chair that her Mama had gifted her sat a five foot eleven inch, two hundred pound, leanly muscled, smooth talking, lady killer with a easy confidence that landed him firmly in the egotistical category. But at the moment, a lady killer that would probably rather abstain from sex for an entire month than sit in Jenna’s girly chair. She could tell that the only thing that equaled Kent’s repulsion for her chair was his surprise that she would even own the chair. Sure, she liked being a cop and generally did mental happy dances whenever she was able to outperform her testosterone-laden coworkers who presumed she was going to be more of a hindrance than a help because of her carrying reproductive organs. She also liked to play with guns, and could shoot almost any gun she could get her hands on at an expert level, when most women would rather get a pedicure than pick up a handgun. But all of that didn’t mean that she didn’t enjoy some of the feminine ideals of life. Such as pretty furniture that was also super comfortable. You’d never catch her with anything pink in her house, but that purple chair with its lush velvet fabric was her favorite piece of furniture to curl up in after a long day at work. The fact that it made her partner uncomfortable to sit in, as if the level of girliness would rub off on him, was a bonus. He was acting like it was only a matter of time before someone would walk into the living room and demand his man card back.

Loved the book, incredibly funny and sweet.
Run out and get this one folks, you won't be sorry!

"Kiss of a Demon King" By: Kresley Cole Review

Kiss of a Demon King
By: Kresley Cole

Synopsis from Goodreads
HIS OBSESSION...
Sabine, Sorceress of Illusions: the evil beauty who surrenders her body, but not her heart.
HER DOWNFALL...
Rydstrom Woede: the ruthless warrior who vows to keep her at all costs.
THEY WERE NEVER SUPPOSED TO WANT EACH OTHER THIS MUCH...
With each smoldering encounter, their shared hunger only increases. If they can defeat the sinister enemy that stands between them, will Sabine make the ultimate sacrifice for her demon? Or will the proud king lay down his crown and arms to save his sorceress?
My Thoughts
I have professed my love of Kresley Cole books before and I’ve gotta say again, even on rereading Kiss of a Demon King still stacks up as amazing!! The world Cole creates is so intricate and the pieces fit together so tightly that it just takes you to another realm of reading. The romance is exquisite and the characters are just so funny and fierce, I can’t even get over it.
Rydstrom is a King that has been deposed by Sabine’s brother. King of a demon realm, Rydstrom has spent thousands of years gathering troops and weapons as he prepares to go up against Sabine’s “undying” brother. Sabine hates her brother and is secretly plotting against him. To fulfill a prophecy, Sabine’s brother sends her to kidnap and romance Rydstrom to create a baby...so as I’m writing this I realize this is kind of confusing but I promise its not in the least. Well a bit, but not much.
Rydstrom is strong willed, a King, and has lived on his own planning a take over for much of his life.      Being kidnapped by Sabine and held under her will understandably doesn’t go well. Recognizing Sabine as his fateful mate, when he finally escapes he decides to take Sabine with him.
Both Rydstrom and Sabine are crafty and smart. Tortured beyond reason by circumstances beyond their control, each has lived through terrible things and have emerged stronger for it. One of my favorite scenes is when Sabine tries to leave Rydstrom and finds herself unable to. Their need for one another is just so heart wrenching.
He found her not even a block away from the house, sitting on a curb.
As he approached, he saw her wiping her face with her forearm. Sabine was...crying? "What are you doing out here, cwena?" Over the past week, Rydstrom had been pleased when she'd worried about him, and gratified when she'd felt the sting of jealousy. Was he a terrible man to hope she was crying about him?
She glared at him with her bottom lip quivering, allowing him to see her like this instead of using a mask. "I d-don't have anywhere else to g-go." Another swipe of her forearm over her eyes. "Lanthe's gone, and I c-can't get to her for six days. And I'm in a strange t-town and land, and Vrekeners are everywhere."
Sabine hadn't even mentioned what they'd just gone through-
"And you br-broke up with me!" she said, her tears falling faster. "Is that supposed to make me happy?"
"Come inside, Sabine."
"No! You t-told me not to." She sniffled, "You don't want me at your house."
He swooped her up in his arms. "Will you shut up?" With his free hand, he brushed her tears. "I made it ten minutes before I came after you.”
And to finish everything that is good, Nix is out in full force in this one. You never know where she’ll show up or what she’ll say but its always worth it.
“You two. You can do a cleaning spell."
One slurred, "But Nixie, I'm really pre-hung-over."
Nix's eyes went wide. "Do it, or the photos go live!"
The witch shook her fist to the sky, crying, "Damn you, Valkyrie! Damn you and your digital ways!”
I love, love, love this book. Rydstrom and Sabine are some of my favorite characters from the series and I’m thrilled with their story. Anxiously awaiting Lanthe (Sabine’s sister) and her story, which I’m hoping will be told soon. Keep up the amazingness Ms. Cole!

"Release Me" By: J. Kenner Review

Release Me

By: J. Kenner

Synopsis from Goodreads

Damien Stark could have his way with any woman. He was sexy, confident, and commanding: Anything he wanted, he got. And what he wanted was me. Our attraction was unmistakable, almost beyond control, but as much as I ached to be his, I feared the pressures of his demands. Submitting to Damien meant I had to bare the darkest truth about my past—and risk breaking us apart. But Damien was haunted, too. And as our passion came to obsess us both, his secrets threatened to destroy him—and us—forever.

My Thoughts

Guess I’ve been on a naughty kick so far this month and I’m continuing the tradition with the newly released Release Me. Seeing it on tour just whetted my appetite so I decided to go ahead and buy it, and boy am I glad I did. Super sexy and just fun, Release Me  takes two tortured souls and brings them together in just the right way.
Damien Stark is a former tennis pro turned entrepreneur and millionaire. He owns nightclubs, hotels, restaurants, factories, a little of everything really. At an art opening one evening he meets Nicole Fairchild, a recent graduate and newly moved to Los Angeles. Nikki’s boss is wanting Stark’s company to invest in a new product that is coming out and she is to act as the bait.
Other people have said it and I’ll say it again, this book has strong elements of Fifty Shades or the Sylvia Day books within them. It doesn’t mean I didn’t like it, because believe me I did. I think at the heart of it is our desire to find a millionaire of our own...sexy, funny, intelligent for our own. I can see the appeal and I definitely have that appeal.
Damien is intense, there is no other way to put it. He knows what he wants, how he wants it and expects to have things his way. He wants Nikki and expects her to fall in line with his plans.

Possess. Have. Hold. Enjoy. Control. Dominate. Pick your verb, Ms. Fairchild. I intend to explore so very many of them.
I found myself enjoying Nikki as well. She’s a bit of a drama queen but twisted which I enjoyed. She isn't just another pretty face, she’s had heartbreak in her past and is still dealing with issues. When she was younger she used to cut herself and I thought the author realistically dealt with the residual effects of her sickness and the very real desire to continue the self destructive behavior.
All in all a pretty compact, well done story. I enjoyed the characters, the love was a steamy affair, and it was just plain fun. Kenner did a wonderfully realistic job too, IMO of how Nikki deals with her abusers and internalizes her feelings. Looking forward to Claim Me which is coming out Summer 2013.

Can he let go of painful memories and let the force of this remarkable woman show him a future he never dreamed existed?

My Thoughts
Ruthie Knox knocks my socks off time and time again. I know its corny but its sooo true! As I was beginning How to Misbehave, I couldn’t help thinking...Knox’s other books take place on a) a country wide bicycle ride and b) subway stations and tunnels. Why would I be surprised that her newest book takes place during a tornado?
How to Misbehave begins with a storm; a huge, huge storm that has sirens blaring and tornadoes firing everywhere. Finding shelter in a basement with Tony isn’t exactly what Amber had planned on doing when she arrived at work. She’s the stereotypical good girl, catholic school, two boyfriends, no cursing. He’s everything she’s not.
Tony is also apprehensive of Amber. She’s shy but he’s intrigued. And its in the darkness of the basement, where they find what lies beneath each other's outward appearances. Tony is scared of the dark and Amber may be a little more naughty than she’s been led to believe.
A classic case of opposites attracting, I think the reason I liked this novella so much was its realness. In life there is awkwardness, there are uncomfortable silences. I think so many romances today are just instant attraction, and while these two did like one another I don’t think it was until it was completely dark and they bared themselves emotionally that they truly connected.
Knox’s trademark wit and hilarity are very apparent in Tony and Amber’s interactions. He knew exactly what to say to needle her and I spent most of the book smiling and shaking my head at his orneriness.
I really really really liked this book, can you tell? I will give a note of caution however, when you finish this one, immediately buy Along Came Trouble because its just as good if not better and the hero is Amber’s brother. Utterly unique and definitely an emerging author (a new favorite of mine, to be sure) Ruthie Knox’s new title makes me want to misbehave, if just a little if my reward is Tony.

Giveaway: "Researching the Contemporary Romance" By: Laurie Larsen

Researching the Contemporary Romance
by Laurie Larsen

Hello everyone! And my thanks to the Brunette Librarian for hosting me today! (May I call you “Marian?” Oh no, never mind, that librarian was a blonde, I believe). Anyway, the librarian asked me to blog today about how I researched for Keeper by Surprise. It’s an interesting topic because when authors talk about researching for their novels, it often centers on topics such as:
  • Historical era accuracy
  • Science fiction believability
  • Details of a character’s occupation
  • Study of a particular setting/country/destination
My books all take place in today’s world. My tagline is: “Everyday life with just a touch of worst case scenario.” Although I do research to ensure that all my facts are straight and accurate, the rest of it just comes straight out of my imagination.
Various kinds of research were necessary for Keeper. Here’s a rundown:
  • Legality of naming a sibling guardian over others: As you know from the blurb, our hero Keith’s parents die in a sudden car accident and he is left as guardian over his younger siblings by the parents’ will. I happen to know, from a recent appointment with our own attorney, that parents can choose anyone they want to be guardians of their children, as long as the guardian has reached legal age -- 18. So the fact that Keith’s parents left their 20-year-old son as guardian, although unusual, is legal. That’s where the touch of worst case scenario collides with everyday life.
  • Wording of a will: For the scene in the book where the attorney read the will, I took the wording directly from our own will. If it works for us, it’ll work for Keith.
  • Day to day life of a social worker: Keith eventually meets beautiful Lisa Carle, a social worker assigned to help out with his case. In order to make sure the office environment that I dreamed up for Lisa was accurate, I called up several social workers I know and asked them questions, then had them read the resulting scenes for their suggestions.
  • Organizational hierarchy of a governmental reporting structure: There’s a sub-plot within the book that has to do with a devastating secret Lisa is hiding that would surely destroy her budding romance with Keith. In the book’s first (and even second) drafts, I had the details of the reporting structure of a certain government employee completely wrong. Fortunately, the husband of one of my beta readers worked in a similar environment and recognized the error. She pointed out to me where the mistake was and I had to do a little brainstorming because it changed a little bit of plot downstream. But better to make changes pre-publication than put out an error that could be a distraction to readers.
  • Military jargon/info: There’s a military theme in the book because Keith was raised by a strict Marine Colonel, and his whole childhood was like a 18-year boot camp. Because I have four or five scenes involving military personnel, various ranks, jargon, etc., I invited a friend of mine out to lunch who had served as a Marine in Viet Nam and ran all my questions by him. He kept wanting to make this a military adventure book, which it’s so not! But he was a big help in keeping that part of it accurate.
  • Geography: Because of the storyline, Keith’s home had to be within easy commuting distance to a Marine base, an hour or less from a big city where Keith’s teenage sister Dana goes on an ill-fated date to a big-name concert, and about three hours from a university. It was like a puzzle finding just the right town. Fortunately, I found a winner: Willow Grove, Pennsylvania, where, coincidentally, my husband used to work in the first couple years of our marriage.
  • Inside of a sorority house on campus: So, as the book opens, Keith is a carefree college student at Penn State University. He’s dating a beautiful sorority girl, Carly. He’s picking her up for a formal dance at her sorority house. When I was researching what sororities are offered at Penn State, I noticed that my mom’s old sorority, Alpha Chi Omega, was an active one. In honor of her, I made that Carly’s sorority. Then, by scanning Penn State’s website I zeroed in on a Penn State Alpha Chi Omega website, and lo and behold, there are pictures of the exterior and interior of the house! My mom was reading the book and at the scene where Keith picks her up at the house, said, “My gosh, how did you know that those are the sorority’s colors?” Well, because I didn’t have to pull it out of my imagination -- I wrote the scene while staring at the house itself, inside and out!
That gives you just a little idea of what types of research are needed for a book that’s grounded in reality and the modern world. And I hope reading this has piqued your interest and made you want to check out Keeper by Surprise

Excerpt
“Hi, is there something I could do for you?”
Boy, was that a loaded question. To Lisa’s dismay, the mere sound of his voice caused a double-shot of female hormones to take a dive into her groin. It was deep and gravely, but polite. A touch innocent. She’d love to let his voice lap over her like ocean waves for hours at a time. She cleared her throat and attempted, probably failing miserably, a cool nonchalance. “Oh, don’t let me interrupt you. I’m here on business.” She commenced her determined trek to the front door.
He took a few steps toward her, then stopped. “I’m sorry? Who is it exactly that you’re looking for?”
She looked at him over her shoulder. He was gazing intently at her, his head cocked slightly to one side. “Uh,” she started, forgetting her name for a moment under the intense stare of those gorgeous … green! … eyes. Who would’ve figured him for green eyes?
He tore his gaze away from her and started looking around. He backed up a few steps to a piece of white fabric lying nearby in the lawn. He picked it up and Lisa saw it was a shirt. He slipped it on effortlessly, while she mourned the sudden and quite unexpected loss of her view of that spectacular chest.
He approached her then and continued his curious inspection of her. Lisa cleared her throat. God, she had to pull it together here. She was working, and she needed to continue to function, even in the presence of this hunk. “I’m here to see Keith. Keith Hanson.”
To her surprise, he smiled, his face lighting for a moment, like a lamp would brighten a dark room. “I’m Keith Hanson.”
My Thoughts
I think what surprised me most about Keeper by Surprise was the originality of the romance. Sure it has the boy meets girl, boy likes girl stuff, but its premise and secondary characters were so original and different that I found myself engulfed in the world quickly and quite succintly. Taking custody of a family member is already tough but add a little romance to the equation? Keith and Lisa were both realistic and down to earth. Serious topics were covered but I think handled in a real world way, which I appreciated. Life's tough and Laurie handled it perfectly. A sweet romance that was utterly adorable, and p.s. I loooved the title. So appropriate!

There’s only one man to blame for her simmering anger and the inexplicable attraction that tilts her heart on its axis. Del.

When Del is forced to acknowledge the truth that the Cheyenne are no threat, his task just gets more complicated: fighting a wild attraction that catches flame at the most inconvenient times, and figuring out the treacherous motives behind his hiring.

Lulu and Merry’s childhood was never ideal, but on the day before Lulu’s tenth birthday their father drives them into a nightmare. He’s always hungered for the love of the girl’s self-obsessed mother; after she throws him out, their troubles turn deadly.

Lulu’s mother warned her to never let him in, but when he shows up, he’s impossible to ignore. He bullies his way past ten-year-old Lulu, who obeys her father’s instructions to open the door, then listens in horror as her parents struggle. She runs for help and discovers upon her return that he’s murdered her mother, stabbed her sister, and tried to kill himself.

For thirty years, the sisters try to make sense of what happened. Their imprisoned father is a specter in both their lives, shadowing every choice they make. Though one spends her life pretending he’s dead, while the other feels compelled to help him, both fear that someday their imprisoned father’s attempts to win parole may meet success.

Daisy Jane's Birthday!
January 19th we celebrated Daisy's seventh birthday. She's one onery weenie dog but I can't imagine my life without her. She's my best reading buddy :) AND she really liked the piece of cookie she was given!
