"Empty Mansions" By: Bill Dedman Review

17704903
Empty Mansions
By: Bill Dedman and Paula Clark Newell
Synopsis
When Pulitzer Prizewinning journalist Bill Dedman noticed in 2009 a grand home for sale, unoccupied for nearly sixty years, he stumbled through a surprising portal into American history. Empty Mansions is a rich mystery of wealth and loss, connecting the Gilded Age opulence of the nineteenth century with a twenty-first-century battle over a $300 million inheritance. At its heart is a reclusive heiress named Huguette Clark, a woman so secretive that, at the time of her death at age 104, no new photograph of her had been seen in decades. Though she owned palatial homes in California, New York, and Connecticut, why had she lived for twenty years in a simple hospital room, despite being in excellent health? Why were her valuables being sold off? Was she in control of her fortune, or controlled by those managing her money?
Huguette was the daughter of self-made copper industrialist W. A. Clark, nearly as rich as Rockefeller in his day, a controversial senator, railroad builder, and founder of Las Vegas. She grew up in the largest house in New York City, a remarkable dwelling with 121 rooms for a family of four. She owned paintings by Degas and Renoir, a world-renowned Stradivarius violin, a vast collection of antique dolls. But wanting more than treasures, she devoted her wealth to buying gifts for friends and strangers alike, to quietly pursuing her own work as an artist, and to guarding the privacy she valued above all else.
The Clark family story spans nearly all of American history in three generations, from a log cabin in Pennsylvania to mining camps in the Montana gold rush, from backdoor politics in Washington to a distress call from an elegant Fifth Avenue apartment. The same Huguette who was touched by the terror attacks of 9/11 held a ticket nine decades earlier for a first-class stateroom on the second voyage of the Titanic.
Empty Mansions reveals a complex portrait of the mysterious Huguette and her intimate circle. We meet her extravagant father, her publicity-shy mother, her star-crossed sister, her French boyfriend, her nurse who received more than $30 million in gifts, and the relatives fighting to inherit Huguette’s copper fortune. Richly illustrated with more than seventy photographs, Empty Mansions is an enthralling story of an eccentric of the highest order, a last jewel of the Gilded Age who lived life on her own terms.
My Thoughts
I remember the very first MSNBC article that featured Huguette Clark and being fascinated about the life this very wealthy but lonely woman led. Huguette was honestly one of the richest people of the 20th century and very few people even knew her name. Once a society miss in all of the paper, Huguette Clark died alone and all but forgotten in a hospital room with only a few people surrounding her. A fascinating story of riches gained and lost, Empty Mansions takes you on a journey that is so much more than one person’s tale.
This fascinating story begins with Huguette’s father, W.A. Clark, a man so despicable, Mark Twain wrote articles disparaging him. Clark comes from humble beginnings and actually struck out during the gold rush. Instead of finding gold though, Clark found his fortune through opportunity and chance. He would travel for days with bread, clothing, eggs, and other necessities not easy to find out at mining camps. These miners would pay good money for eggs, which would both finance the next trip for more supplies and gave Clark a hefty profit. Moving into the big leagues and actually purchasing businesses and even mines helped W.A. Clark become one of the richest men in America during his lifetime.
Now this is where I became fascinated in the life of the Clark’s. The money aspect didn’t interest me, but the pure will it took to live and become what he did just fascinated me. Clark, rich and powerful, was married and had several children. It was during his second marriage to the much younger Anna Eugenia La Chapelle, that he had two children; Andree and Huguette.
Huguette had everything a child could ask for. Dolls, clothing, prestige, cars, wonderful foods, maids, nannies...everything. W.A. Clark didn’t let his family want for everything, and when he was gone, his second wife Anna didn’t go without either. Throughout Huguette’s lifetime she was relatively reclusive, shunning publicity but being fodder for the newspapers all the same. After her Mother passed away, if anything, Huguette became more of a recluse, only speaking with few people, hardly any family, and relying on personal nurses for her most basic needs. She even spent the last several years of her life, by herself, in a personal hospital room, which blows my mind even now.
Empty Mansions tells this incredible story of wealth, the rise of power, and Huguette Clark in such a warm and inviting way it doesn’t seem at all as a stuffy nonfiction book. Well researched and do I mean well researched, they give you an insight into this world of the uber rich. The question raised now, did Huguette know what she wanted to do with her vast fortune after her death? An ongoing dramatic story, I fell in love with Empty Mansions from the beginning. The wonderful descriptions of Huguette’s childhood and throughout her adulthood stunned me into disbelief at times.
Gritty and honest, the authors do a wonderful job of making these characters, who while are real people, seem real to you as a reader. They aren’t one dimensional creatures who fit into a stereotype, which I think would have been easy given the material to work with. I’m not a fan of nonfiction, but Empty Mansions took me in and never let me leave until the end. Fantastic job and easily one of my favorite books of 2013.

"The Professional: Part 1" By: Kresley Cole Review

18223667
The Professional: Part 1
By: Kresley Cole

Synopsis
ARE YOU READY TO PLAY?
From #1 New York Times bestselling author Kresley Cole comes The Game Makers; a scorching new erotica series about a young woman desperate to uncover the mysteries of her past and the hitman bound to protect her.
From an opulent palace in Russian, to the wicked playgrounds of the mega-wealthy in Paris, to the sultry beaches of Spain, the two lovers will discover that even their most intimate—and forbidden—fantasies can come true…
My Thoughts
Wow. The single word that comes to my mind after reading the first installment of The Professional. Intriguing, smart, super hot, and just plain well written have come to be hallmarks of Cole’s writing and it comes out full force in this new series.
Natalie is a successful student, working three jobs and trying to finish her Master’s Degree. She was adopted as a baby and is now interested in finding her birth parents. At a bar one night with her friends, Natalie looks up to find an extremely handsome man watching her from across the room. Little does she know but this mysterious man knows exactly who she is and works for her biological father.
Sevastyan has come from Russia with the specific job of bringing Natalie back to his boss. Saved from a life as an orphan on the streets, Natalie’s father is a large crime boss who has taken him under his wing. Almost loyal to a fault, Sevastyan drops everything and travels to the US, first to investigate Natalie and ultimately bring her home to her father and his boss.
An immediate attraction between the two simmers from their first shared glances, and only grows hotter when Sevastyan finally steals her away from her home for her own safety. Natalie is strong willed and doesn’t take the strong arming very well. Nervous about meeting her father, Sevastyan soon becomes the only constant in her life. The only thing or person really she may have control over.
This is only the first part of the story what a ride its been. I’m literally jonesing for the next piece of the puzzle. Natalie’s father is a huge mystery we are dying to unwrap, and the romance between the uber masculine, silent Sevastyan and strong, independent Natalie just seems to get more complex and fantastic. Wonderfully sexy, smartly written, and just an all around excellent story, Cole has written a fantastic piece that is likely to be on lots of "Best of" lists in the near future.

Sneaking Candy by Lisa Burstein
All I ever wanted was to make a name for myself as Candice Salinas, creative writing grad student at the University of Miami. Of course, secretly I already have made a name for myself: as Candy Sloane, self-published erotic romance writer. Though thrilled that my books are selling and I have actual fans, if anyone at UM found out, I could lose my scholarship…and the respect of my faculty advisor, grade-A-asshole Professor Dylan.

Enter James Walker, super-hot local barista and—surprise!—my student. Even though I know a relationship is totally off-limits, I can’t stop myself from sneaking around with James, taking a few cues from my own erotic writing…if you catch my drift. Candy’s showing her stripes for the first time in my real life, and I’ve never had so much fun. But when the sugar high fades, can my secrets stay under wraps?

About the Author:
Lisa Burstein is a tea seller by day and a writer by night. She received her MFA in Creative Writing from the Inland Northwest Center for Writers at Eastern Washington University. She is the author of Pretty Amy, The Next Forever and Dear Cassie. She lives in Portland, Oregon with her very patient husband, a neurotic dog and two cats.

My Story
By: Elizabeth Smart & Chris Stewart

On June 5, 2002, fourteen-year-old Elizabeth Smart, the daughter of a close-knit Mormon family, was taken from her home in the middle of the night by religious fanatic, Brian David Mitchell and his wife, Wanda Barzee. She was kept chained, dressed in disguise, repeatedly raped, and told she and her family would be killed if she tried to escape. After her rescue on March 12, 2003, she rejoined her family and worked to pick up the pieces of her life.

Now for the first time, in her memoir, MY STORY, she tells of the constant fear she endured every hour, her courageous determination to maintain hope, and how she devised a plan to manipulate her captors and convinced them to return to Utah, where she was rescued minutes after arriving.  Smart explains how her faith helped her stay sane in the midst of a nightmare and how she found the strength to confront her captors at their trial and see that justice was served.

"The Wrong Billionaire's Bed" By: Jessica Clare Review

The Wrong Billionaire's Bed (Billionaire Boys Club, #3)
The Wrong Billionaire’s Bed
By: Jessica Clare

Synopsis
The Billionaire Boys Club is a secret society of six men who have vowed success--at any cost. Not all of them are old money, but all of them are incredibly wealthy. They're just not always as successful when it comes to love...
Audrey Petty's always been the responsible one. The good twin.  Successful, dependable, and trustworthy--that's Audrey. She'd be the perfect girlfriend for her childhood crush, billionaire Cade Archer...except that she's pretty sure she's not even on his radar. But when fate (and her chaotic twin) come together, Audrey finds out that she'll be spending the next month with Cade at his remote cabin retreat. It's a dream come true...
Until she meets her worst nightmare.
Billionaire playboy Reese Durham is used to seducing women to get what he wants. But when stiff, too-proper Audrey bursts into the private mountain lodge and scares his companion out the door, it's time for a little revenge. It's clear that Audrey's in love with his buddy, Cade...and it's clear to Reese that blackmailing Audrey with this information can get her to agree to just about anything. Like furtive kisses in the dark, or a secret rendezvous in the woods. Audrey may think she knows what she wants, but Reese is determined to show her what she needs.
And as Reese discovers the volatile minx behind the buttoned-up exterior, he starts to think maybe she's just what he needs, too.
My Thoughts
The third in the Billionaire Boys Club Series, The Wrong Billioinaire’s Bed takes off almost immediately after the events in the second book. Focusing on Audrey (Gretchen’s twin from the second novel) and the Playboy of the group Reese; it was a wild ride from page one.
Reese is out for a weekend at his friend Cade’s cabin. Hoping to relax and maybe make a few business deals but nothing particularly special. In walks Audrey, his friend Logan’s assistant, with her twin, pop star Daphne to ruin his quiet, solitary vacation. The twins are almost a lesson in opposites. Audrey is quiet, calm, and buttoned up...complete with the boring clothes and a bun. Her twin Daphne has bright hair, a loud personality, and a rather rampant drug problem she is trying to overcome.
Reese should be drawn to sexy Daphne but he finds himself intrigued by Audrey. She seems to reserved but around him her claws come out. Quick witted and not afraid to speak her mind, Audrey has been in love with Cade most of her life. When she comes to the realization that her childhood crush doesn’t share her feelings, she starts to see Sexy Reese in a different light.
I am a huge fan of Jessica Clare’s book and have absolutely loved this series all the way through. Its so much fun and this book is no exception. Reese was such a great character, fun loving, hilarious, smart, and above all, actually interested in Audrey for her personality and wit. Audrey has been featured in the previous two books but finally has a chance to shine. Let us rejoice in a smart heroine being liked for her intelligence instead of her waist size!!
The Wrong Billionaire’s Bed may be my favorite book in the series yet. Fast paced with a hot storyline, Reese and Audrey jump off the pages. Smart, sexy with the right amount of sexual tension, Clare has once again knocked this one out of the park. Can’t wait until the next Jessica Clare book, I’m counting the days!!

"Throwing Heat" By: Jennifer Seasons Review

Throwing Heat (Diamonds and Dugouts #3)
Throwing Heat
By: Jennifer Seasons
Synopsis
The sexy baseball players of Jennifer Seasons' Diamonds and Dugouts series slide into home with a final fiery romance worthy of a World Series win.
Nightclub manager Leslie Cutter has never been one to back down from a bet. So when Peter Kowalskin, pitcher for the Denver Rush baseball team, bets her that she can't keep her hands off of him, she's not about to let the arrogant, gorgeous playboy win. Especially when the prize could put her business on the map. She's got this in the bag, just so long as she can stay out of his arms … and his bed.
Peter struck out once before with Leslie, but this bet is sure to be the second chance he's been waiting for. Determined to stoke the passion he knows is there, he'll do anything to win—even if it means playing a little dirty.
But as things heat up, this combustible pair will have to decide just how much they're willing to wager on one another … and on a future that just might last forever.
My Thoughts
Having loved the first two in the series, both Stealing Home and Playing the Field, I jumped at the chance to read an ARC of Throwing Heat. Jennifer Seasons writes terrific baseball players, fantastic romances, and some pretty hot scenes if you know what I mean. The third book in the series tells the story of Peter Kowalskin, pitcher of the Denver Rush baseball team and Leslie Cutter, sister of Mark Cutter the Rush’s catcher.
Anticipating their fiery romance, Peter and Leslie come together in a crash, bang, boom that you’ve come to expect in a Seasons’ novel. Having had a brief fling in the past, when Leslie’s apartment is flooded by a plumbing problem, Peter sees this as an opportunity to finally find a way to get with Leslie. Beyond her plumbing problems, Leslie is dealing with financial hardships and trying to get her night club on the map. Peter is facing the end of his career, health problems, and an uncertainty in his future.
While I enjoyed the romance and the dialogue was very clever, it almost seemed like there was too much story. We have health issues, physical injuries, death, money problems, miscommunication and I honestly felt like I was on a roller coaster part of the time. Great characters but with so many obstacles in their path and not really dealt with, the book was a little ruined for me. I still loved the characters and enjoyed the story, it just felt like too much story in that amount of pages.
Throwing Heat is a fairly good addition to the Diamonds and Dugouts Series but I wouldn’t recommend it as a read alone for people new to Seasons’ work. Peter and Leslie are fun, witty, and wildly romantic characters but the abundance of problems made the book a little too much work for me as a reader. If you are wanting to start the series, be sure to check out Stealing Home and Playing the Field first.
