My Thoughts
     “Loving David” was another title recommended if you like “Fifty Shades,” and I was intrigued. Just by looking at the cover, you wouldn’t even think this had anything close to Fifty and in my opinion it wasn’t, but I can see the comparisons. The intense emotional journey you go on through this tale is similar but very different, but in a good way, I promise!
     Charlotte and David meet one afternoon as David is running from fans and the rabid paparazzi in a small town. Charlotte is a forty something romance writer  (Yay!) and David is a 30-something up and coming actor known throughout the world. In an effort to hide David from crazy fans, Charlotte allows him to stay with her and her friends at a writer’s retreat.
   Over the course of a couple of weeks, David insinuates himself into Charlotte’s quiet life. She is interested in David, but finds their age difference a bit daunting to get around. It doesn’t bother David in the least, but he worries Charlotte’s insecurities won’t ever let them be together.
    Other reviewers have said it and I’m going to repeat it, “Loving David” is an emotional rollercoaster. I loved it, I wanted to shake Charlotte and say, what are you thinking; and at other times I just sighed myself lovin’ David a little bit. And the ending! Oh my gosh! The ending...I don’t want to spoil it but I will admit, I didn’t see it coming and it left me with a tear and a smile.
     The secondary characters in this novel help create an environment for both romance a bit of hilarity. Emma was by far my favorite friend of Charlotte's! She was a 70+ widowed writer who doesn’t care what anyone thinks, so she speaks her mind. Here’s a conversation between David and Charlotte that made me giggle...and its about my favorite character, Emma!

“I have to say; I can’t imagine being bored around such an outspoken group.” David snuggled down into the chair a bit and looked at Charlotte. “Plus it’s nice to be around women who don’t want to pull my hair or rip my clothes off.”

Charlotte let out a huge laugh. “I think Emma may have wanted to rip your clothes off!”

David chuckled. “God bless, Emma.”

    “Loving David” is an excellent romance for folks dying for an emotional connection. Funny, loving, at times frustrating, but above all else enjoyable, I found Charlotte and David’s journey to be heartbreaking and sweet. It sounds like a mess of contradictions I know, but when you read the book, you’ll know exactly what I mean. It may leave you with a tear but underneath it all there will be a smile.

Dara stopped by the blog to give us her opinions on everything...from Anthony to her favorite foods!  

Dara - Come on, be honest...what drew you to Anthony the first time around?

Leaving aside the facts as to how we met, I would have to say it was how he treated me. We were very much from two different worlds. While my mother’s choice in profession had given me at least a comfortable life to start, it gave me no respectability. He was a very powerful, wealthy, influential duke in England. Despite my background and how we met, he never treated me with anything less than respect. He liked to read and encouraged me to use his personal library whenever I wished.

Did you ever think you would get back together, even at your darkest moments?

Until I learned the truth about his lie, I had no desire to get back together with him. Maybe drive a stake through his (I thought) black heart, or leave him out roasting for the noon day sun while I watched, but not together intimately. I didn’t understand how the good and generous man I had known when we shared time together had become a monster, but I believed his claim that he’d killed my baby brothers.

But yes, every so often, I longed for the man I’d known in England. It doesn’t speak well of me, that I could still yearn for a man I’d thought did me such a horrid turn.

Let's talk about your job - how did you end up with the job of the chief liaison? 

I helped found the Bureau of Non-Human Affairs back in the day. I served five years as its first Director, and then stepped out of the public spotlight. But back in the ‘90’s, the current director approached me about stepping into the role of Chief Liaison between the United States and the vampires. My name still carried a lot of weight from my part in bringing the non-humans into the public eye, and I’ve done a lot over the years to help ease tensions between the species.

I was bored at the time, so I told him yes. Why not? It would get me a salary for something I did anyway (help keep the peace between the species as a mediator at times). He was satisfied with that and we got along well because he knew I wasn’t looking to some day step into his shoes. Government jobs can be very competitive and you wouldn’t believe how many people backstab just to get ahead.

When the old director retired, the current director (Grant Price) stepped in and I somehow got roped into doing more than just act as Chief Liaison. I still haven’t figured out how he talked me into being Deputy Director. Supposedly it was just until he could get someone through the hiring process. That was four years ago, and I’m still officially the Deputy Director as well.

Dara, what sorts of books do you like to read in your spare time?

Mostly the classics of by-gone days, Jane Austen, Shakespeare, and Dante. I’ll read books of the modern world occasionally, but most lack a certain lyrical feel that authors of old had.

I do like reading political biographies though. Having been a political figure myself, I find it amusing to read about politicians.

Favorite foods?

::aims a steady look at you:: I’m a vampire. Take one guess.

::grin:: Seriously though, when I care to eat at all (which is getting rarer and rarer, since I can no longer digest food and must therefore dispose of it in a very unpleasant way, if you get my drift), I’m a big fan of Ben & Jerry’s ice cream. The New York Chocolate Chunk is heavenly.

Do you have a favorite quote to leave our readers with today?

Ben Franklin: Those who can give up essential liberty to obtain a little temporary safety, deserve neither liberty nor safety.

That says a great deal. I obviously never met Mr. Franklin, but he seemed a wise man. I do a great deal of what I do because I’m trying to protect the vampires from losing their liberties and to keep them safe. I failed my siblings, but I can make a difference when it comes to the vampires.

People deserve to grow up in a world with no monsters.

About the Author

Originally from the Sacramento Valley, Tory packed up and moved all the way to Southwest Florida in 2004 with her husband (a Florida native) under the premise that ‘hurricanes almost never hit that part of the state.’ That year, 4 blasted the area. 4 more came the following year, and her husband blames her for bringing the hurricanes. She now resides in Jacksonville and is relieved that, thus far, no more hurricanes have followed her around.

She began writing in kindergarten when a turnip wished to be human and, other than a hiatus shortly after getting married, has never stopped. Her love of vampires began somewhere in junior high, and combining the two loves didn’t take long. She loves music, considers herself a ‘book slut’ whose reading habits would break her family financially if given free reign, and is (usually) delighted to be a mommy of twin Shrimpettes and a Shrimp.

My Thoughts
     Before I read this book, I decided to check out reviews for this book. I think something that stuck out to me was how most of the reviews mentioned how fresh this book was...and now that I've had a chance to read this great new paranormal author, I completely agree!
     Dara is a vampire living in a world where vamps, humans, shapeshifters and what have you live together. Sometimes in harmony but more often than not there is a little strife. When Dara had been a human, she fell in love with Anthony. I'm sure its no surprise that there was a bit of heartbreak and now she absolutely hates him. It wouldn't be a great paranormal romance if they didn't come back together  now would it? The true magic is in the journey these two characters take and how they deal with one another.
      The storyline is so original and Tory really does a great job of approaching vampires in a new way.  Fast paced and fun, I just loved Dara and how she dealt with Anthony. She wasn't taking any attitude from him and she definitely gave it back in spades. Oh and Anthony...who I think can pretty much be summed up in one word - YUM! A fun new series from Tory and I am definitely looking forward to the sequel Blood Mage Rising.

My Thoughts
     Maya Josephs enters a nightclub for a night looking for a hot guy to take her mind off of her jerk of an ex-boyfriend. Immediately, Alex O’Connell is at her side warning her to stay away from him and the nightclub. She may not like what she finds, but she decides to stay...thinkin’ she’s likin’ Alex a whole bunch!
     “He Ain’t Lion” is a shifter novel featuring paranormal characters or in this character, a were-lion. In Celia Kyle’s universe, humans and the weres live together and know of each other's existence, if they are a bit uncomfortable with one another. Maya, lonely and fairly disappointed with life, is immediately attracted to Alex. Alex is strongly attracted to Maya, so what do you think happens next?
     A quick read with plenty of naughty goodness, “He Ain’t Lion” tells the story of two lonely people coming together and falling in love. Definitely for a fan of the quick down and dirty, Maya and Alex are a match made in heaven in this short easy romance. Perhaps my favorite thing of this short novella? There’s a sequel featuring this couple and...they’re gonna have a baby!

With new pregnancy hormones making her inner kitty extra bitchy, Maya’s not sure who she’s going to murder first: her gyno for discovering the pregnancy, her guards for following her every move (and annoying the living shit out of her), or the striped beyotch cooing over Alex. Screw it. She'll start with the tigress and work her way around to the other two. 

Lucky for everyone involved, it’s a good thing Alex knows how to tame her inner she-cat…and make her purr.

My Thoughts
A short sequel to “He Ain’t Lion,” “You’re Lion” tells part of the happily ever after in Maya and Alex’s story. Maya is pregnant and not happy about it at all. Beyond gaining weight, Alex is more protective of her than ever and the guards that have been following her are more annoying than helpful.

     Another cute an fastpaced story from Selena Kyle. It was nice seeing Maya and Alex again after the first book and enjoyable to check up on them.

I've been gone for two weeks! You wouldn't believe how sad I was last week that I didn't get a chance to participate last Monday. 

So where have I been? 

I've been at the annual Missouri Library Association meeting in Springfield, Missouri. Had a fantastic time and came back with some wonderful ideas for use in my library.

Attended a book talk by Kate Klise - and got an autographed book! 

Who doesn't love Pete the Cat? We were entertained by the musician behind the book. Learned some sweet dance moves!

A Visit to the Library Center in Springfield, Missouri

The Library Center in Springfield, Missouri

This past week I've been a bit absent here on the blog...because I've been at the annual Missouri Library Association's meeting! 

I love going to MLA every year that my Director allows me to, but this year I was able to tour maybe the coolest library I've ever been to (besides mine of course!).  

Isn't that just lovely?

The Library Center in Springfield, Missouri is the biggest, prettiest, and maybe the most gorgeous library I have ever seen. If you can't tell, I have total book envy. 

I walked around like the paparazzi during our visit and am going to share some of my favorite pictures with you.  

The library will be holding a "Tolkien Festival" this fall. I kid you not, this gorgeous painting was almost as tall as I am and huge as you walk into the lobby. Brilliantly done and an excellent display to promote their programming. I kind of wish I lived in Springfield, so I could enjoy!

Being a teen librarian, when you walk into a library you've gotta check out the teen section. Everyone does it a little differently and again, gotta say...I loved Springfield's!

I regret that I didn't take a picture of the room as a whole, but I did get some awesome shots of the glass quotes that surround the room. Inspirational and enchanting, it took me a second to realize that all of the quotes come out of popular YA titles.

Gateway and Truman Award Winners

One of my favorite things from the Teen area was how they displayed their award winners. I currently have mine displayed on the tops of the stacks just as a huge display, but I loved how they were stacked. They looked so inviting and even I wanted to take one home!

On my way out, I had to checkout the huge "Friends" gift shop.

I had a lovely time in Springfield, but my visit to the library was truly remarkable. 

Fun and a little awe inspiring, the Springfield-Greene area is incredibly lucky to have such an amazing library so close to them. 

I spent quite a bit of time visiting the genealogy room (totally forgot to snap a few photos of the HUGE genealogy collection) and the librarian's holding down the fort were so welcoming and friendly. 

The library is a community treasure. 

When you are in Springfield, you find nothing but people happy to have such a wonderful library in their midst. 

If you are ever near Springfield, Missouri, do yourself a favor and visit the treasure that is The Library Center!

I couldn't remember if I had shared this yet or not, so I'm going to go ahead and share again!

My Thoughts:
     Since the beginning of the Black Top Cowboys series, I have had a soft spot for Celia. Kyle not so much, but Celia I’ve really felt for. Her parents died when she was young and being raised by two bone headed brothers isn’t the easiest life. The past three books we’ve watched Celia come into her own and I was so glad to finally see her happily ever after.
    Celia and Kyle have known one another since they were children. They had played together, rode bikes together, went to school and now both were on the rodeo circuit. While they each were semi-attracted to one another, they never once acted on it since Celia’s brothers would have had a heart attack. Yet as our book starts out, one morning both Celia and Kyle wake up, married to one another.

“You signed the papers. With little hearts by our names, if memory serves. So some part of you wanted to marry me, Celia.”

Her jaw dropped. He was wrong. Completely, totally, utterly wrong wrong wrong.

      Sure the book is a little formulaic, but I liked it. Kyle and Celia go back home and live in Kyle’s newly deceased father’s house, coincidentally fairly close to Celia’s family. The novel deals with changing perspectives of families and the changing Wyoming ranching life.
    What the story may lack in originality completely makes up for with Kyle and Celia. They are both spunky and strong willed, which leads to all sorts of delicious conflict. Whenever these two are in a room together, I almost wanted to cheer because they had the most delicious verbal sparring I've read in a long time. Love a smart dialogue and this one definitely has it.
     “One Night Rodeo” is a great romance for fans of the series or fans of western romance in general. Its a bit naughty with plenty of hilarious situations as Kyle learns to be a rancher. These two people are both thrown out a limb not knowing what will happen, so they each must make concessions and allowances in order to truly be happy with one another.
