"Pride Mates" By: Jennifer Ashley Review

"Pride Mates"
By: Jennifer Ashley
Synopsis from Amazon.com:
Twenty years ago, shape shifters of all kinds banded together and announced themselves to the world, only to be shunted to areas no human wanted ("Shiftertowns"). They are forced to wear Collars that control their hunting and fighting instincts (referred to by Shifters as "Taking the Collar").
Liam Morrissey is currently liaison between the Shifters of Austin, TX, and the humans of the city. Kim Fraser, attorney, finds herself in the unique position of having to defend a Shifter on a murder charge.
She ventures to Shiftertown to seek out Liam's help, and there stumbles across too many secrets the Shifters want kept secret. The un-mated Liam is forced to protect Kim against the wrath of his clan leader and his own father, and to his surprise he discovers a powerful attraction to the sassy, sexy lady.
My Thoughts:
A new series from Jennifer Ashley is always good news, and I am incredibly excited to start this one. This book had been in my to be read pile for a while and I had no idea what I was missing. "Pride Mates" is the first title in the Shifters Unbound series and boy, what a start!
Animal Shifters have revealed themselves to the world and are required to wear collars to ensure they aren't violent. Kim Fraser is a lawyer attempting to defend one of these shifters who has had their collar malfunction. Very reminiscent of civil rights, shifters are thought of as an inferior race. When Kim enters the shifter settlement in an attempt to learn more about their culture, she meets Liam, a bartender and 2nd in command of the shiftertown. Liam is deceptively easy going and calm, when in actuality he is a predator with a keen intelligence.
Kim is instantly attracted to Liam and vice versa. Liam is really the only person willing to help Kim defend the young shifter who had a collar malfunction. The incarcerated shifter is accused of killing a human, so its a pretty serious situation. Other shifters are suspicious of Kim and Liam is her only link to the shifters.
The romance moves quickly, which I really enjoyed. Liam is a man who knows how to use his power and is keenly intelligent. Kim is desperately trying to save her client, making her inventive and investigative. Liam and Kim grew together over the novel in a realistic manner and I loved when they finally realized that they had feelings for one another. The secondary characters were utterly lovely, funny and I find myself looking forward to reading the rest of the series to find out what happens to these funny family members. A great series by a wonderful author!
