"Wanted" By: J. Kenner Review

Wanted
By: J. Kenner
Synopsis
He is everything I crave, all I desperately want—and he is everything I can’t have. Evan Black embodies my every fantasy. He is brilliant, fierce, and devastatingly handsome. But he is also headstrong, dangerous, and burdened with secrets.  My family warned me to stay away, that I could never handle Evan’s dark dealings or scarred past. Maybe I should have listened. Maybe I should have run. But our desire is undeniable, and some temptations you just can’t fight. And from the moment we touch—the passion between us consuming us both—I know that I will never be the same.
My Thoughts
I’ve read a few J. Kenner books and while I’ve enjoyed them, they’ve never grabbed me like Wanted has. From the very first few pages, the mystery of Evan and the uncertainty of Angelina as she enters the real world was addictive to say the least. Well written characters, a wonderful start to a new series, and a rich secondary character set easily makes this one of the best new series to watch.
Angelina’s much beloved uncle, Jahn, has just passed away. Just having graduated college and taking care of her suddenly ill uncle haven’t left Angelina with much time to plan her life, or decide which direction she wants to go. Her father is a politician,  and wishes for her to work on capital hill. She’s dating an FBI agent, who doesn’t light a fire in her like her Uncle Jahn’s friend, Evan.
Evan is as mysterious as the night. Angie has known Evan for years but has never really known him if you know what I mean. A student of Jahn, a lover of all things fine, and definitely not always on the right side of the law, Evan promised Jahn he would never pursue Angelina. With Jahn’s death, Evan can no longer deny his feelings for Angie and Angelina begins to see her infatuation with Evan may not be as one sided as she thought.
Addictive is probably the best way to describe Wanted from the first few pages. I couldn’t get enough Evan and his total just alphaness. It was freakin’ fantastic. He may be an art thief, he may not, he may be under investigation by the FBI, he may not...but boy oh boy do I love him for being the bad boy that he is. The will she won’t she plays out beautifully and their first kiss will have you shouting yes!
This book is so much fun! Swift moving with a total alpha lead hero and a fun heroine in Angie, I can’t wait to see what J. Kenner has in store for us in Heated. Evan’s two friends, Tyler and Cole, will make great characters in their own books, and I will most definitely be rushing to read their books. Secrets abound and I have a feeling they are only going to get better and a bit juicier. Who are these three men and just what exactly have they been up to?
1. Wanted
2. Heated (May 13, 2014)
3. Ignited (September 2, 2014)

"The Rosie Project" By: Graeme Simsion Review

The Rosie Project
By: Graeme Simsion
Synopsis
An international sensation, this hilarious, feel-good novel is narrated by an oddly charming and socially challenged genetics professor on an unusual quest: to find out if he is capable of true love.
Don Tillman, professor of genetics, has never been on a second date. He is a man who can count all his friends on the fingers of one hand, whose lifelong difficulty with social rituals has convinced him that he is simply not wired for romance. So when an acquaintance informs him that he would make a “wonderful” husband, his first reaction is shock. Yet he must concede to the statistical probability that there is someone for everyone, and he embarks upon The Wife Project. In the orderly, evidence-based manner with which he approaches all things, Don sets out to find the perfect partner. She will be punctual and logical—most definitely not a barmaid, a smoker, a drinker, or a late-arriver.
Yet Rosie Jarman is all these things. She is also beguiling, fiery, intelligent—and on a quest of her own. She is looking for her biological father, a search that a certain DNA expert might be able to help her with. Don's Wife Project takes a back burner to the Father Project and an unlikely relationship blooms, forcing the scientifically minded geneticist to confront the spontaneous whirlwind that is Rosie—and the realization that love is not always what looks good on paper.
The Rosie Project is a moving and hilarious novel for anyone who has ever tenaciously gone after life or love in the face of overwhelming challenges.

My Thoughts
A few weeks ago when the Goodreads 2013 Best Reads were revealed, I read about a little book called The Rosie Project. It looked cute, had great reviews, but what drew me to it was the possibility of the quirky romance. What I thought this book was though and what it turned out to be were two completely different things.
Don is a highly successful professor who has never been able to maintain any sort of a relationship during his adult life. If he had been diagnosed, he would probably have been told he had asperger's. He has only a very select number of friends, has a hard time in social situations, and really has never had a romantic relationship with anyone. So he begins the “Wife Project,” a way to both gain a wife and maybe simple companionship. In his methodical way, Don creates a checklist for his perfect wife and questionnaire perspective women can fill out if they’d like to fill the position.
Before the Wife Project can begin in earnest, Don meets Rosie. Sloppy, slightly wild, impetuous and a smoker, Don knows she doesn’t qualify. Rosie is in need of help though, she’s searching for her real father. Don being a whiz with DNA and the study of genetics, they set out to find her biological father.
The story is told through Don’s perspective, which I will admit threw me a bit off. He has a different view of the world and what he understands may not be what everyone else sees and understands. There are lots of undercurrents so there is a little detective work to really see between the lines.
To be completely honest, I also thought there would be a little more romance. I wanted that grand gesture but the end just seemed to fizzle out for me. The beginning of the book was interesting, I loved Rosie, but the end seemed long, and really dragged out. I hated Don’s one and only male friend (he cheated on his wife incessantly). An ok read but not in my top 10 for the year at all.

"Love and Other Games" Blog Tour

Love and Other Games
By: Ana Blaze, Melinda Dozier,
Aria Kane and Kara Leigh Miller

LOVE AND OTHER GAMES is a collection of four sexy new adult stories centered around athletes competing in the Winter Games by Ana Blaze, Melinda Dozier, Aria Kane, and Kara Leigh Miller.

Worth More Than Gold by Ana Blaze

Amy Pierce, the klutzy sister and manager of America’s Skating Sweetheart, is used to being invisible. But when a friend drags her to a party near the Olympic Village, Amy catches the eye of a sexy Norwegian ski jumper. It’s a magical night, but an awkward next morning has her running.

Everyone knows Erik Andresen’s best shot at an individual medal was back in 2010, before an injury pulled him from the competition. He’s there for his team, but a hot night and a remarkable final training session have him wondering if a gorgeous good-luck charm could give him another chance at the podium.

With a little bit of luck, these two might have a shot at something worth more than gold.

Trouble with Gold by Melinda Dozier
US snowboarder and notorious prankster, Ty (Trouble) Madsen is only getting a taste of his own medicine when his Olympic teammates shackle him to a fence wearing nothing but his boxers.

Reception and protocol volunteer, Nadia Hoffman, gets up close and personal with the sexy snowboarder to rescue him, but she's not the kind of girl who lets her hormones get in her way. A professional performance could help her land her dream job at Olympics Committee Headquarters, but her new assignment supervising the rambunctious US Snowboarding Team is making that difficult. Can she see behind the snowman in the community center bathroom and into the warm heart of the man everyone calls Trouble?

The Girl behind the Gold by Aria Kane

Greek aerial skier Lia Milonas’s parents are about to lose the family farm. Saving it means medaling and landing a huge sponsor. While her no-nonsense attitude has her well on her way to a medal, it hasn’t won her a place in fans' hearts.

“Come back with a story that will make readers cry, or don’t come back.” This is what Brandon James’ boss told him before he left New York to cover the Winter Games for Moment Magazine. With a wink and a smile, he can charm his way into any invite-only party, but that career-making story is nowhere to be found – until he meets Lia.

The two strike a deal that should get them both what they want - but neither would have guessed they’d also find what they need.

Ice Gold by Kara Leigh Miller
Colton Campbell thrives on the fast paced, adrenaline rushed lifestyle of being an Olympic hockey player.

Despite Brenna Jessup's abhorrence for the games and the athletes, she's hand-picked as the official photographer for the U.S. Olympic Hockey Team.

When a faux pas by Brenna almost costs Colton his career, she owes him. Too bad for her, Colton doesn't want apologies -- he wants retribution! And he knows just how to get it -- and her -- in the process.

My Thoughts
First off, props to the authors with the well timing of this book! I realized the winter Olympics were coming up but when I began to read, it occurred to me that the release of this book and the actual Olympics would almost coincide. Fantastic!
All of the stories in this anthology are pretty enjoyable, which is sometimes a rarity for me. Hitting a homerun every time is hard but this book does it fairly well. All told within the realm of the Olympics, each story revolves around different characters and different sports. The author's voices are clear and different tones of each story make for vividly different but fun tales of romance and sports.
All around a highly enjoyable and fun read, I enjoyed it far more than I thought it would. Beyond being excellent storytelling, I loved the timing of the book and think the authors did an excellent job of making all of the moving pieces work. I enjoyed the diversity in the stories and characters and will definitely be wondering what the lives are like behind the athletes on the television.  Brava!

Hyperbole and a Half:
Unfortunate Situations, Flawed Coping Mechanisms, Mayhem, and Other Things That Happened
By: Allie Brosh

Synopsis
This is a book I wrote. Because I wrote it, I had to figure out what to put on the back cover to explain what it is. I tried to write a long, third-person summary that would imply how great the book is and also sound vaguely authoritative--like maybe someone who isn’t me wrote it--but I soon discovered that I’m not sneaky enough to pull it off convincingly.
So I decided to just make a list of things that are in the book:
PicturesWordsStories about things that happened to meStories about things that happened to other people because of meEight billion dollars*Stories about dogsThe secret to eternal happiness*
My Thoughts
I absolutely picked up this book because it was a 2013 Goodreads Choice Winner for Humor. I didn’t know what could be funnier than Wallbanger or Jim Gaffigan’s Dad is Fat, so I knew I had to read Hyperbole and a Half. After waiting for my library to get it in, I brought home this cute little book and tucked in immediately.
I don’t know what I was expecting, but it wasn’t this. Having had no prior experience with Allie Brosh or her web comics, I was surprised at how enchanted I was with her drawings and storytelling. Extremely smart and just plain funny, this was the first book in a long time where I laughed out loud and actually had to set the book down to control my laughter.
I have a slightly grumpy weenie dog named Daisy Jane and Allie’s comics about her “simple” dog hit the nail right on the head. Her drawings made me laugh because they absolutely related what it is like to have a not so smart dog and their different facial expressions.
Incredibly cute and funny, I found myself absolutely enjoying Hyperbole and a Half. When it was finished, I wanted more...which is really saying something, considering this book clocks in at over 350 pages. Some of the comics I laughed at and enjoyed more than others, but that’s to be expected, isn’t it? Glad I gave it a chance, overall a very cute and fun book!

"Love Me Not" Guest Post By: Reese Ryan and Blog Tour

When a Secondary Character
Has a Story to Tell
By: Reese Ryan

When I started writing my debut novel, I had no designs on creating a series. Making the First Move was the story of Melanie Gordon and Raine Mason. Period. But the story was populated by a cast of vibrant secondary characters. By the time I’d written The End I knew that one of those characters—Jamie Charles, Melanie’s best friend—deserved a story of her own.

Jamie’s history was dark, but intriguing. Her mother was an alcoholic. Her father abandoned them when she was just ten. At thirteen she was determined to run away from home when her best friend’s broken promise saved her life. When the Ellie & Lou Gordon learned of Jamie’s plans, they requested legal guardianship.

Jamie had practically lived at the Gordon’s home already. Despite their cultural difference, it was the Gordons who’d always felt like her family. Moving in with them was a natural fit. In many ways her life improved drastically. Yet, much emotional damage had already been done. She was angry and bitter; at times self-destructive. How could a girl who’d been abandoned by own parents not find it difficult to love and trust others?

Yet, when we meet Jamie in Making the First Move she has already made quite a transition. She hasn’t traded in her Doc Martens for a pair of angel wings. Still, she’s a softer, gentler version of her former self.

I needed to understand why.

I wanted more than backstory and brief dialogue. I needed to watch her story play out. Experience the joys and pains of her mental and emotional transformation. That required a move that felt counterintuitive—stepping backward to tell Jamie’s story.

When Carina Press acquired the manuscript that would become Making the First Move, I’d expressed my intention of telling Jamie’s story in a related book. My acquiring editor, Rhonda Helms, agreed. Jamie was a character with a story worth telling.

Love Me Not is the story of when Jamie met Miles and began the journey to discovering herself. The events of this story precede those of the first book because that’s where the real story lies for Jamie. On the day that Miles Copeland walks into her life. The same day a ghost from her past walks back into it.

Both stories in my Bad Boys Gone Good series stand alone. But if you haven’t already read Book 1, read Love Me Not first to follow the story in chronological order.

My Thoughts
As a reader, I kind of shy away from new authors. I don’t know why for certain, but I have so many favorites, why look for more? When Love Me Not fell into my lap, I was instantly sucked into the story...so much so that I didn’t want it to end!
Jamie has had a hard life. Her father abandoned her and her mother chose men and drugs over her own child. Taken in by her best friend’s family, Jamie has always lived a little outside of the family unit, never really fitting in but not completely alone either.
One night while working her job as a bartender, Jamie serves a handsome businessman named Miles. He’s new in town, successful, and extremely handsome - all a combo that Jamie just isn’t used to. Of course Miles is interested in the spitfire bartender that is sassy and not drawn to him like other women, but it takes more than a few quick lines to pick her up.
I think what I enjoyed most about this book were the characters. Sure it was a good story, but Jamie and Miles were just plain fun. Jamie was so darn prickly and Miles does everything he can to get under her skin. As Jamie’s turbulent past is revealed, Miles never shies away...if anything, his ties just get stronger. A wonderful romance by Reese Ryan, I absolutely will be finding more books by this author.

Bully
By: Penelope Douglas

My name is Tate. He doesn't call me that, though. He would never refer to me so informally, if he referred to me at all.

We're neighbors, and once, we were best friends. But then, one summer, he turned on me and has made it his mission to screw up my life at every opportunity. I've been humiliated, shut out, and gossiped about all through high school. His pranks and rumors got more sadistic as time wore on, and I made myself sick trying to hide from him. I worried about what was around every corner and behind every door.  So I left.

I spent a year studying abroad and bathed in the freedom of life without Jared. Now I'm back to finish up high school and get the hell out of here forever. I'm hoping that after a year of breathing room, he's moved on and forgotten all about me. But even if he hasn't changed, I have. I'm not interested in avoiding him or turning the other cheek anymore. We're going to go head to head, because neither of us wants to back down.

She never expects to desire the arrogant, amoral cad. LORD OF SCOUNDRELS
Damn the minx for tempting him, kissing him ... and then forcing him to salvage her reputation! Lord Dain can't wait to put the infuriating bluestocking in her place --- and in some amorous position, And if that means marriage, so be it! --- though Sebastian is less than certain he can continue to remain aloof ... and steel his heart to the sensuous, headstrong lady's considerable charms.

My Thoughts
When we left The Professional: Part 1, Natalie had just met her biological father after being whisked away to Russia. Highly affluent and a possible mob boss, Natalie’s father has many enemies. When he asked his chief enforcer, Sebastian, to find Natalie and bring her to him, neither Sebastian nor Natalie could ever truly understand how intense of an attraction would soon develop.
In The Professional: Part 2, Sebastian isn’t going to back down. He knows he wants Natalie and has her Father’s permission to marry her. Natalie is attracted to Sebastian, but isn’t nearly ready for the level of commitment he seems to expect from her. Suddenly, when their world is torn apart and a bounty placed on her head, Sebastian and Natalie are forced into seclusion to hide from her Father’s enemies.
Honestly, the biggest complaint I can come up with is that I didn’t get to finish the book. Cole keeps the tension constantly rising while staying true to both the characters and the story. Super sexy, Part Two ratchets up the sensuality to epic proportions. Fun sexy times abound but the character development grabs you from the beginning. Natalie is a 24 year old innocent thrust into this Russian mob world and Cole accurately portrays her indecision and indecisiveness with this new role she is expected to play. Sebastian, having lived in this world most of his life, finds Natalie mystifying and never reacting the way he seems to think she should.
I think Kresley Cole is trying to kill me! The Professional: Part 2 was even more intense than the first. With the perfect combination of sensuality and action, Part 2 leaves you eagerly anticipating Part 3. No one can say that Cole isn’t at the top of her game with The Professional. Lets see if I can make it to January 20th now!

"Why Grizzly Bears Should Wear Underpants" By: Matthew Inman Review

Why Grizzly Bears Should Wear Underpants

Synopsis
Why Grizzly Bears Should Wear Underpants is the second variety comic collection and fourth book from the comedic mastermind behind TheOatmeal.com, Matthew Inman. Classics from the website, including “Dear Sriracha Rooster Sauce,” “What It Means When You Say Literally,” and “What We Should Have Been Taught in Our Senior Year of High School,” are featured alongside never-before-seen works of epic hilarity that will delight veteran and newbie Oatmeal fans alike.
In this second collection of over 50 comics, you'll be treated to the hilarity of "The Crap We Put Up with Getting On and Off an Airplane," "Why Captain Higgins Is My Favorite Parasitic Flatworm," "This Is How I Feel about Buying Apps," "6 Things You Really Don't Need to Take a Photo of," and much more. Along with lambasting the latest culture crazes, Inman serves up recurrent themes such as foodstuffs, holidays, e-mail, as well as technological, news-of-the-day, and his snarky yet informative comics on grammar and usage. Online and in print, The Oatmeal delivers brilliant, irreverent comic hilarity
My Thoughts
I read The Oatmeal on a regular basis, so I was fairly disappointed in the offerings of this newest book. I don’t know if I expected lots of new content or just more original stuff, but for some reason Why Grizzly Bears Should Wear Underpants was fairly underwhelming.
As with the previous Oatmeal books, the newest selection is a wide selection of the usual Oatmeal comics. The usual funny tone with incredible graphics, fans of the web comic are bound to laugh. If you are a fan though, you will find a majority of the comics had already appeared online, kind of making the book unnecessary. Sure there are a few new ones, but not enough to warrant an entire book.
A funny book that I did enjoy, I will warn that I had hoped for a little more original material. Nothing is as funny the second time around as it is the first. Still funny though and filled with wry humor, if you are a fan of cat jokes, or even bears in underpants, this book is for you.
